Money, money, money!

In September we published the church accounts for the year ending 31 August 2004 (if you didn't see them copies are still in the entrance and corridor, please pick one up). Those accounts showed that we spent £10,000 more than we received in the offering and other income. When the Church Council met last month we had to take some difficult decisions in the light of this situation. It was agreed to inform the Circuit that we will have to reduce our giving by a similar amount from September 2005. Unfortunately we know the effect that decision will have, the only way the Preston Circuit can save money is by reducing the number of people employed to minister in the Methodist churches in Preston. In particular it will almost certainly mean that in 2005 or 2006 the ministry support for Fulwood will be cut— in other words Myrtle's time will be cut or Peter will have extra responsibility for other churches in the Circuit. We are sorry about this but after the recent appeals to the congregation to increase their giving showed no appreciable change it was recognised that we could not continue to lose money each year.

You might think this is a strange thing to say in the week when we have purchased a new minibus and installed new sound equipment in the church. The minibus has been bought with money saved up since the last one was bought 16 years ago, and it was felt by the Church Council that this was necessary for the mission and ministry of the church, not least in our support for the elderly and youth of the church family. The new amplification equipment has been paid for from gifts in memory of some of our members who died last year (not least Cecil Bacon who built the old system) and the rest has come from the Building Together funds because the new system can be transferred into any renewed premises in the future.

If you have any questions or comments about these matters please speak to the Ministers, stewards or treasurer.

God Bless,

Peter Sheasby & Myrtle Poxon
on behalf of the Church Council
