Building Together News

Building TogetherWe are now approaching the end of another very busy fund-raising year and it is with satisfaction and some pride that we announce that by the end of October we had raised £67,136.17. As I write this, there are three more events on the calendar, so I am optimistic that by the end of the year we will be knocking on the door of £70,000. I realise that in the over-all scheme of things that this is not a huge amount— a drop in the ocean really, but quite a big drop, nevertheless.

As you are all aware we have done all sorts of things this last year: sponsored climbs, sales, dramatic productions and lectures. Donations continue to come in; Talents money is growing, as is the fund of tiddlers. A different venture this year, and a brave one, was the production of the Church Calendar. This was the brain-child of Chris Hoban and with it she took a great leap of faith. We have not sold all the calendars yet, but the production costs have been covered and we have moved into profit. The idea behind the project was to produce something that would be a lasting souvenir of the Church family. Chris asked the Church family to pray about it and she found that this was a great support. On the day the calendars arrived from the printer there was a real buzz in the office and speaking personally my first sight of it gave me a lovely warm feeling.

The Launch Day was a great success, too. The small team of Calendar Girls— Chris, Christine Marshall, Alison Stevens, Morag McManus and myself— had no great expectations for the day and we were delighted at the number of folk who came and lingered, drank coffee, chatted and bought calendars for themselves, their families and their friends. Calendars have gone out to all corners of the kingdom and some into the hands of old friends which include Elizabeth and Michael Wearing and Ian Hu. They have winged their way across the world: to Canada and America (to the Schmucks), to Australia and New Zealand and to South Africa. One has found its way to one of the largest gold mining complexes in Africa— Tarkwa Mine in Ghana. They are popping up in Europe, for example in Sweden and several copies travelled to Recklinghausen. There are probably other destinations of which I have no knowledge. If a copy has gone to the North Pole or Easter Island or any similar exotic locations, I would love to hear about them.

The Fund Raising Group are very grateful to all who have organised an event, sponsored folk, supported sales and concerts etc. Thank you for your patience— and tolerance when we always seem to be trying to sell you something. At the end of the day, whenever that comes, it will all have been worth it. Have a lovely Christmas and a peaceful New Year and once again thank you!
