Even in a wheelchair, the journey isn't too far for an octogenarian
Members of the Evangelical-Methodist Church community on Limperstrasse and members of Fulwood Methodist Church from the English twin town of Preston visit each other at regular 2-yearly intervals. A new chapter in friendship and cooperation has opened up under Pastor Marco Alferink and Reverend Peter Sheasby, who met for the first time during this visit.
Since Wednesday a 17-strong delegation from the English
community has been staying in Recklinghausen. Young people are also taking
part for the first time
, said Peter Sheasby who took charge of Fulwood
Methodist Church just 3 years ago. The youngest participant is 14 years old
and the eldest
visitor, Violet Birchall, is celebrating her 80th birthday today.
Persuaded by her friends to come with them, the sprightly octogenarian is
participating in every activity. It's simply wonderful
, she said.
Everyone is agreed on this point, in view of the very
varied programme: including the trip to Cologne to start with, then the tour of
Recklinghausen, as well as active participation in the life of the community.

In his luggage, Peter Sheasby brought interesting news
from the twin town. From this month, Preston can be called a Fair trade
City
.
Towns receive this certificate when a certain number of shops and cafes sell
Fairtrade
goods such as tea and coffee. The visitors were then pleasantly
surprised when the Mayor, Ferdinand Zerbst, told them that Fairtrade coffee
has been drunk in the Town Hall for many years now.
