Mrs. Elizabeth Laraway (née Cook)
Wednesday, 23rd February, saw my Auntie
Betty celebrate her one hundredth birthday in some style when she threw a party
for the staff and residents of the Abbeyfield House where she now lives. She was
delighted that a number of her Fulwood friends and neighbours had been to visit
her around that time, and on the following Saturday a family gathering was held
with no fewer that 65 of us present. People had travelled from Canada and the
south of France to be there, as well as from some widely separated parts of
Britain.
The taking of four-generation photographs was commonplace: in all she has nineteen great grandchildren! Most of her nephews and nieces (my generation) managed to be there as well, along with many of their own children and grandchildren.
One hundred she may be, but my Auntie Betty remains a
smart and dignified lady; one who has all her wits about her and can still play
a mean game of Scrabble. She's also one to be envied: no problems with joints
for her and— as if to prove it— she got up and danced too! However,
she does
admit to slowing down a bit
these days!
