Easter Reflection

The disciple whom Jesus loved

(John 20:3-9)

Peter and the other disciple (the one whom Jesus loved) set out and made their way to the tomb. They ran together, but the other disciple ran faster than Peter and reached the tomb first. He peered in and saw the linen wrappings lying there, but he did not enter.

We are so very different, Peter and I!
But that amazing day,
one in our love for Jesus,
we ran together.
Well, we started running together—
but Peter is tall and heavy
and I am little and light,
and I soon outran him.
I could boast that I got there first
but once there I hesitated and held back,
too afraid to make that first step of faith
in to the dark, mysterious tomb.
Peter walked straight in, with no hesitation,
and witnessed the empty tomb first,
but the strangeness overwhelmed him,
and, trembling, he called me in.
Jesus loved Peter,
with his strong, impetuous nature,
and he forgave him
when he got things wrong.
But Jesus loved me very much, too,
with my vulnerability and sensitive nature,
and he forgave me
keeping me close by his side.
And so we stood there together,
the bold and the timid.
And as we gazed at the empty wrappings of death,
we understood.
