Christ's Crucifixion and Resurrection
Bathed in a bloody sweat, Christ raised
His head
As veils of darkness hung above the land;
"Arise" He
then to his disciples said,
"For my betrayer now is close at hand".
As
waving torches then appeared in sight
Footsteps approached, along the winding
way;
A man advanced, his face, shaded by night,
And Judas came, His Master to betray.
Christ was arrested, scourged and put
to scorn,
Sentenced to the CrossÐ without delay;
Beneath the uncertain light of early
dawn
The tortured Victim started on His Way.
The jeering multitude came out to
see
His Suffering and to torment Him more;
He writhed in agony upon the Tree
And cried to God, forgiveness to implore.
Darkness descended o'er the land
entire
Then fear and terror seized the trembling crowd;
They heard Christ cry aloud,
saw Him expire,
The centurion, gazing, voiced his praise aloud.
Darkness was fading when,
at early dawn,
The women came, afraid, unto the Tomb;
"He is Risen", was
proclaimed that Morn,
The angel's words dispelled all shades
of gloom.
