CHURCHES TOGETHER

LIVERPOOL ECUMENICAL PILGRIMAGE

On Saturday September 6th, 90 people from the Churches Together in Fulwood and Broughton set out in two coaches to visit Liverpool.

Liverpool Catholic CathedralOut first stop was the Roman Catholic Cathedral, where we had a conducted tour of the building. We had an excellent guide whose clear, concise and enthusiastic commentary made for an interesting visit. He told us that the original plan for the Cathedral prior to World War 2 was for a magnificent building with a cupola larger that the dome of St Peter’s, Rome. Only the large foundations for this building were completed - which now form the crypt for the present cathedral. Services are still held in the crypt and it was here that Peter Williams, Deacon of Our Lady and St Edward’s, conducted a short service on the theme of ‘The Cross which unites Christians together’.

Our next visit was to Liverpool Anglican Cathedral where we had lunch in the Refectory, with time to view the cathedral on our own and note the memorial on the floor, in the main aisle to its architect Charles Gilbert Scott. We marvelled at the huge reredos behind the alter designed by the same artist as The Statue of Eros in Piccadilly, London.

Following this we visited the Liverpool Dock area in beautiful sunshine after a wet morning. We missed the torrential rain and hailstones experienced back in Fulwood, during the afternoon!

The day was rounded off by our enjoyment of an excellent tea provided by the ladies of Ormskirk Methodist Church (Emmanuel). They told us this was a way of fundraising for their £385,000 refurbishment scheme - recently completed.

What an excellent ecumenical outing: R.C. and Anglican cathedrals, and tea at a Methodist/U.R.C. church. It was an opportunity to meet other Christians from our local Churches of the Covenant in the true spirit of ecumenism. Our thanks in no small measure go to Alan Clarke who so efficiently arranged it all.

May I urge you to support other events organised by C.T.F.B. - the next ones being:-

1. October Talks.

2. Songs of Praise, November 2nd. (Consult the notices for details)

3. A day of recollection on Saturday November 10th at Tabor. A preparation for Advent.

AND ----- next year consider joining the annual pilgrimage, enjoying a happy day and being able to meet fellow Christians.

"How wonderful it is, how pleasant for God’s people to live together in unity." (Psalm 133).
