SABBATICAL REFLECTIONS

I began my Sabbatical in April under strict instructions to share time with Stephen, away from everything here. We managed a few days away in the Lakes, which was very refreshing and proved to be a part of my preparation for my walk in May. I also was able to spend a week in Wales with most of the family during Holy Week. It was in these few weeks that I realised just how tired and weary I had become, and to lay down responsibilities for a while was indeed the way to regain focus and energy. Three months went very quickly but the following is what I have achieved:-

Computing Course

I began by signing on for the basic Start Course at Preston College, this was a twenty hour course on the basics. Having completed that I enrolled for the European Computer Driving Licence: this is 120 hours and you are given a year to complete it. I have completed two modules and taken the exam in one. I am committed to completing the course and hope the summer will offer space to do this. I have really enjoyed returning to the world of learning and, and as you see from this typed report, I have at least begun to master the art of computing.

Health and Fitness

I had pledged myself to improving my health and fitness; this began in taking up walking. This proved to be something that both Stephen and I enjoyed, doing some walks before I set out on the Cumbrian Way. The five day event started on 8th May in very wet weather. It was a most enjoyable experience sharing this time with others: overcoming the difficulties we faced made completing the walk even better. The opportunity to be away from the busyness of normal life, amidst the wonderful scenery, enabled me to reflect on the ‘awesome’ nature of God.

I did not know, when I began my Sabbatical, that I would have to undergo treatment for my thyroid problem. This took two weeks of my time: not because I was ill, but having to be isolated. The experience itself actually was very illuminating.

Study

I started some reading on the Diaconate, but being able only to fill in some background, this is the area in which I have achieved little, but I hope to continue the work.

Family

I am most grateful for the opportunity offered to be there for the family. The exam period was a little stressed at times, but having the freedom to be just there made a difference. To be able to spend time with my mother was important especially, as a family, we will have to make some decisions about her future.

Reflections

I have found the whole experience very rewarding and feel it has enabled me to regain strength and to refocus on my call and my ministry. Last week’s vote in Conference was not something I had planned in any shape or form, but I feel a little more able to cope having had the Sabbatical.

I am very grateful to all the circuit for the space they granted me and hopefully I will continue the things I have started.
