This
startling headline to a paragraph appeared in the Prestbyter Survey
, the
excellent official magazine of the Presbyterian Church in the United States.
The paragraph is an example of the style of writing which the Americans
cultivate to perfection and is, to some people, so effective.
One cold Sunday morning fifteen people came to service in a certain Church. During the service the Church caught fire. The news spread that the Church was burning. Scores of people who remained at home heard the news, rushed to the scene, and stood up for two hours in snow a foot deep, in zero weather to watch the Church burn.
