Sign the Petition: Aid Worker’s life threatened

We have received an urgent plea from Romy Tiongco (UK resident working out in Philippines) for prayerful and practical support regarding a situation that has developed in the Philippines.

Romy Tioncgo has been involved with Christian Aid and the Jubilee Debt Campaign for a number of years, including a time as the Regional Co-ordinator in Preston. His wife, Linda also works for Christian Aid and is currently on secondment in Sri Lanka. Romy is working in his native Philippines with the Muslim Christian Agency for Advocacy Relief & Development (MuCAARD) and has been asked by local activists to stand for the post of Mayor of Damulog at the May elections – one that he had held for nine months as an interim measure in 1986. In a political climate plagued by corruption and intimidation, his ability and integrity was thought to command strong support amongst the less privileged members of society. A number of other like-minded people agreed to stand for election to the Council, and Rogelio Estudillo, a life-time friend, became the group’s political organiser.

However, on January 4, Rogelio was shot to death at his home. Romy himself has been threatened and members of the panel of candidates have also been menaced. Two of the original candidates withdrew from the contest, though it seems that these have been replaced by others – brave people! Though the police are obviously looking into alternative scenarios, Rogelio’s death has the appearance of a political assassination, and it would seem Romy is in considerable danger. At such a time, experience has shown that if the victim is known internationally and with support and solidarity abroad, governments can react quite quickly – if sufficient fuss is made. Local police are more likely to pursue their inquiries more vigorously if Manila feels the situation could be embarrassing!

Petitions are being made to the President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo appealing for her intervention in the situation. Copies of the petition for completion are attached. Please spread this message in your Church (& anywhere else!) asap so that we can play our part in seeing this situation resolved.

Completed petitions should be sent to:

H & R Pyle, 9 Carriage Drive, Frodsham WA6 6DR
