Building Together as the clocks go back

The Winter Pansy Sale was very successful. Although it appeared that there were not many customers, the plants soon disappeared. Thank you to Mavis and Len who organised it, helped on the day and returned the unsold plants, to Jan and Charlotte for taking control of the money, to Christine Marshall in the kitchen, and to Ian Fenton, Jacqueline Clarke and Amanda Latham who all came to help in various ways. We were pleased to have Angela from Ribblesdale and her mum, Annette. The highlight was a visit from Morag with Alan and her sister Sandra. Morag looked well and was delighted to have managed the trip. We will publish the amount raised once the bill for the plants has been paid.

Situations vacant— Opportunities not to be missed!

We are in the fortunate position of having a lively, vibrant Junior Church with well over fifty children and young people on roll and a regular attendance of about forty. Junior Church meets each Sunday morning except when there is a family service. Teams of staff work with specific age groups on a rota basis to share the responsibility.

We can only meet the needs of the next generation if members of the church contribute their time and skills. Many do and we are grateful to them. However, the following posts are now vacant awaiting the appointment of enthusiastic, busy people. (They are the only ones with time to do them!)

Junior Church Secretary

This job involves working with the Junior Church co-ordinator and leaders to:

  • produce the agenda and record the minutes of meetings
  • ensure correspondence is dealt with
  • produce letters and notices to keep in touch with parents and carers
  • keep up to date records

The Junior Church Secretary need not be a leader, teacher or helper (although they could be!)

Junior Church Leaders

We also urgently need people to join a team of staff working with a group of children, approximately once a month. This also involves planning and preparing the material (using both published guides and resources which the whole team has produced) to deliver sessions. Training will be given.

Junior Church Helpers

Do you enjoy working with children and young people but don’t feel able to plan the resources? Could you spare 2 or 3 Sundays a month? If so, we need
Helpers to support the teachers who deliver the planned sessions. No preparation is needed but you will provide continuity of care and another pair of hands.

Also…

We also need help producing a newsletter and managing the equipment and materials that we use.

If you would like to know about any of these posts or have an informal chat about the work, please ring or email Janet Wales tel 863791.

Friends of Mulanje Orphans

FOMO is achieving so much in the villages within a sixty mile radius of Mulanje, Malawi. Started by Mary and Keith Woodworth from Walmer Bridge in 2000 with 20 children, there are now ten care centres where 3 600 children go each day after school. There they are given food and have the opportunity to play games, football, netball etc. and they can learn skills such as computing, tailoring, cooking and growing their own vegetables. They are provided with health care, clothes, shoes and books and are given love and hope for their futures. They are all given exercise books, pens, pencils and everything necessary to attend primary school. 185 of the children are being paid for at secondary schools and in further education.

All this is being achieved from our small part of the world and by your generous donations. It is run in the UK entirely by volunteers and every penny raised goes to help the children in one way or another. Your support is very much appreciated.

On Saturday, 2nd December at Hoole Village Hall, Liverpool Old Road, Much Hoole, the June Baker Singers will be giving a concert in aid of FOMO. Tickets cost £5 from Mary 01772 619409, Gillian 01772 617245 or Jean 01772 615958.

Helping does make a difference.

World Poverty Day 2006

More than eight million people wore white bandsInternational Day for the Eradication of Poverty: 17th October 2006 in the UK in 2005, and some great progress was made in the fight to make poverty history. But it’s not over yet. World leaders have yet to deliver the promised debt cancellation and aid increases. That’s why, as part of the Global Month of Action, we’re asking you to wear your white band again on World Poverty Day — Tuesday, 17th October 2006 (and everyday until then). You’ll be joining thousands of people who’ll be taking a stand against poverty. Let’s show world leaders that they must deliver on the promises they’ve made on trade, debt, and aid.

The UN has produced a PDF leaflet explaining the day’s aims.
