A complete idiot’s guide to online shopping

Many readers will know that the church has been raising money through its website for some time now through a partnership with a growing number of retailers. In this article I shall give a step-by-step guide to buying a book online.

Assumptions

I shall assume that you know how to use a mouse and a keyboard and that you have an internet connection, either at home, at the local library or elsewhere. You will also need an email address.

The address bar: type the internet address in hereFirst, open your web browser (probably Firefox or Internet Explorer). Type into the address bar (at the top of your browser’s window) the church’s web address: fulwood.org.uk and press enter.

Fulwood navigation bar, shop link highlightedYou should see something like the image below with a number of links to different parts of the site. You may wish to bookmark this site for quick access later. Click on the Shop link (highlighted in the picture.)

Buying a book

You are now looking at the ‘webshop’ which offers what, at first glance, may appear to be a bewildering array of options. Don’t worry. We shall plough on and buy that book!

Buy.at search barNotice the Search bar in the picture to the left. You can look for shops by category or by name. Major shops are listed on the front page. I am going to buy my book from Amazon so I shall click on the button below which takes me to their site. Amazon: add to shopping basketOnce you have found the item you want, you should add it to your shopping basket.

You can either continue shopping or ‘Proceed to checkout’. When you check out you will need to enter your email address and ‘Sign in’.Amazon: sign in

Enter your address carefully on the next page and choose how quickly you would like the book to be delivered.

You will now be asked for your card details (although you can choose to pay by cheque). Enter them carefully. Choose a password. This should, ideally, be a random selection of letters and numbers. Do not choose your mother’s maiden name!

All being well, you will now see a page showing your order details. Ensure that everything is correct and then click ‘Place your order’. You will soon receive an email and, a few days later, a book.

I shall leave it to the reader to decide whether this is a guide for a complete idiot or one written by a complete idiot! If there is anything you do not understand then please leave a comment below.
